Build a home this July with Habitat for Humanity as part of annual Hope Challenge event

Housing-based international development charity Habitat for Humanity are calling architectural firms to help them make up 50 teams who will compete against each other to ‘build a home’ between 5-7 July 2013 under the shadow of Mam Tor in the Peak District, as part of their annual fundraiser Hope Challenge.

The event is designed to raise money that will help 100 families escape poverty and also awareness of the huge issue of homelessness and poor housing conditions worldwide.

Teams participating in the challenge design and build their own makeshift shelter from scavenged materials, then sleep in it for the two nights, experiencing a little of what millions of families around the world living in some of the worst housing conditions experience every day. They are encouraged by Habitat for Humanity to raise a fundraising total of £2,470 or more and all money donated will go towards helping some of these families build a safe, decent home and have a new hope for the future.

Graham Barber, Site Manager for Conroy Brook Development who took part in 2011 said: “We got involved because we’ve got most things they haven’t, and we as a team felt inspired to give those people better shelter and maybe running fresh water from our enjoyable fund raising.”

The two-day event, which tests both their physical and mental strength and sees the winning team win a prize for designing the best shelter plus raising the most money, is all in the name of the charity’s ongoing fight against poverty. This summer the charity is hoping to increase the number of teams involved making it their biggest and best fundraiser yet.
