Global Tender: Oxford Street Christmas Lights in London by 20 March 2013

An international search has been launched by New West End Company to find a partner to completely redesign and install a truly innovative Christmas Lights spectacle on London’s world-famous fashion street. The annual switch on event marks the start of the festive season; a season which attracts over 40 million visits every year, and sees £1bn taken through tills across Oxford Street. The global tender calls upon leading UK and international agencies, to create a breath-taking display that will attract interest from across the globe, making the capital a world leader in innovative lighting design.

Oxford Street is home to 70 flagship stores including the world’s single largest fashion store Topshop, drawing an average weekly footfall of nearly 4 million. The global tender is announced as Oxford Street is undergoing a multi-million refurbishment, ahead of the launch of Crossrail in 2018, including the Park House development scheme, the biggest development on the street for 40 years, to new stores opening including a 6,500 sq m flagship Primark store and a planned 35,000 sq ft Zara flagship store.

Considering anything from vast oceans of LED lights to 3D projections animating some of London’s iconic buildings, the new global tender will look for companies to use the natural street environment within the creative vision to form part of the overall, glittering masterpiece.

The New West End Company, which represents business along Oxford Street and is leading the global tender, is inviting agencies from around the world to submit initial visual concepts and drawings, as well as suggestions on how the spectacle will be installed along the two mile high street. All initial applications must be submitted by Thursday 20 March 2013.

The new design will be lit up for the first time ever at the switch-on event in November. Previous world renowned acts who have switched on the display include bestselling British solo artist Robbie Williams, the top-selling album group of the 21st century in the UK Westlife, and the most successful British band since the Beatles, during the 90’s when girl mania hit fever pitch, The Spice Girls.
