Fendi to fund Trevi Fountain restoration project

Fendi, the luxury Italian fashion house, has announced plans to fund a €2.2m renovation of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy.

The renovation, which will finish in 2015, will feature photographs of famous Roman monuments produced by Fendi’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. As part of the restoration, the baroque statues will be cleaned, new waterproofing installed and the strength of the steel supports will be checked.

Speaking about the project, Karl Lagerfeld commented: "I think it’s a great idea and a great project. This fountain is a symbol of the Rome like the Colosseum and St Peter's and I am happy that we can all help."

Over 251 years old, the monument had shown signs of disrepair after pieces of the fountain’s facade came away last summer. The restoration project is part of the Fendi for Fountains initiative as the fashion house has also pledged to donate €320,000 for the restoration of Le Quattro Fontane (the Four Fountains) in Rome.

Fendi will receive a small sign on the building works to let visitors and locals know that it was the sponsor of the project and a plaque will be constructed near the fountain thanking the company for their contribution.
