Award-winning Yas Waterworld by Atkins now open in Abu Dhabi

An additional element to the Yas Island development in Abu Dhabi has completed. Designed by Atkins, Yas Waterworld is an 11 hectare complex with 43 assorted rides and attractions and has already won two prestigious awards: a Leading Edge Award at the World Waterpark Association 2012 Symposium and Overall Project of the Year at the Middle East MEP Awards.

A team of 30-40 engineers and environmental consultants contributed to the highly-sustainable design which has achieved an Estidama Pearl One rating for its reduced energy use and water consumption. In all, the project has 55.2km of pipework and 20.2km of cabling, the majority of which is hidden underground.

Atkins’ Design Director Tom Wright, who led the architecture team, said: “We were asked by the client to create the best aqua park in the world with an Arabian fantasy theme. We drew together a multidisciplinary design team that harnessed our local knowledge, our international experience and a bunch of out-of-the-box creative thinkers. The result speaks for itself, with two major design awards under its belt already.”
