52,000 sq m Aalto University Expansion

Aalto University Properties Ltd has arranged a competition to design Aalto University's Otaniemi central campus and its main buildings.

Phase 1 of the competition task consists of designing a lively central campus area for Aalto University and the entire science and research community in Otaniemi with an additional complementary building of 8,000 sq m is to be located within the site of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

The edges of the competition area are defined by the main building of the former Helsinki University of Technology and Main Library, both designed by Alvar Aalto, and a number of other buildings of cultural and historical value. The principal user of the new facilities will be the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, which began its operations at the start of 2012 when the Aalto University School of Art and Design merged with the Department of Architecture, formerly part of the School of Engineering.
