Zojila Tunnel to begin construction in August

Officials have announced that construction for the first phase of the Zojila Tunnel between Gagangir to Sonamerg in India will commence in August 2012. Once completed, the line will stretch from Kashmir Valley to Ladakh Region. Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister for Transport, explained: “Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the construction of Zojila Tunnel in Kashmir Valley to provide all a season link to the twin districts of Kargil and Leh with other parts of the country.” The cost of this first phase is an estimated RS200 crore per km with a deadline for the Detailed Project Report set for March 2012.
