About the awardsThe WAN AWARDS Residential Sector is a major international competition, and the final or our 6 bi-monthly 'Excellence in Design' series for 2010. The residential sector incorporates the 5th annual WAN House of the Year Award, but also includes a category for larger housing projects. As such, the Residential Sector consists of two separate awards:
EligibilityWAN Residential Award 2010 If you have designed a residential project, whether an apartment block, housing estate or other multi-occupancy units*, including refurbishment and conversions, that has been completed during the last three full calendar years, (on or after January 1st 2007), you can now enter for the WAN Residential Award 2010. (*must consist of a minimum of 10 units. Housing schemes with less than 10 units may submit a single unit for the single-family category below) WAN House of the Year 2010 If you have designed a single-family house that has been completed during this calendar year only, you can now enter for WAN House of the Year 2010. Please note there is no 'Unbuilt' category for this sector. Judging criteriaThe jury will assess entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, use of colour, form & special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weighting: 1. How your design addressed the key elements of the client brief or overcame particular challenges. 2. Examples of how your building has: evolved its specific building type and /or used design and or materials to enhance its integration with its context and /or community. PromotionThe WAN AWARDS are gaining interest from local, national and international media around the world and last year's House of the Year Award became the talking point of the global architectural community - a fact proved by the visitors to the WAN website which serves over 10 million page impressions per month. In addition, selected projects will be entered into our Featured Projects section in WAN News Review, a weekly focus on residential buildings that will run during the awards to generate even more exposure for participants. Each week, our editorial team will choose one project from the pool of entries to be our 'Residential Project of the Week'. (Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the long list of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.) Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success. Competition stagesA long list of 25 entries will initially be selected after the closing date, further details of the project: plans, sections, elevations and more technical information will then be requested from these entrants. From the 25, a shortlist of six will be selected before an overall winner is chosen. The winning entry will receive a 12 month subscription to WAN's Tender Alert service (current value £1,250) and an award certificate. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as 'commended'. All entries will be published on WAN and the winner and shortlisted entries will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 145,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.
