Private bank Ansbacher's new offices blend the best of new and old in new headquarters

Ansbacher’s new headquarters, designed by GMW Architects, occupies a unique Thames-side location close to Southwark Cathedral. A Grade II listed Victorian building and its 1960s extension have been transformed to provide 4,850 m2 of modern offices. The Victorian Hibernia Chambers has been refurbished and its internal core arrangements re-modelled, while the existing extension has been stripped back to its concrete structure and re-clad in clear, full-height glass panels that reveal its internal form and enhance the superb views. Internally, the two parts of the building are arranged around an atrium, which facilitates the transitions between their differing floor levels. The identity of floors is clarified through the use of colour and shade; each floor has a designated colour that progressively deepens as one approaches the waterfront.
