BBG Architects designs first casino in New York's famous Catskills Mountains
Casino gaming in New York took a giant step forward last month with Governor Spitzer’s approval of the St. Regis Mohawk Casino. Located 90 miles northwest of New York City. Brennan Beer Gorman Architects (BBG) has designed the 600,000 gaming destination, which is awaiting final approvals, which includes the land being taken into trust by the Department of the Interior.
A convenient location directly off Route 17 makes the casino easily accessible from New York City and other large metropolitan areas in the region.
Developed with a total programmed public area of approximately 600,000 sq ft, the casino will be built on two levels. The casino building has been designed to reflect a relationship to nature, similar to great lodges, incorporating elements such as stone and natural wood. Inspired by the local architectural vernacular, the famed Adirondack Style, BBG has created a distinctly modern building. Glassed-in pedestrian walkways will accentuate and enliven the building’s perimeter while a stone tower will become a visible icon – all surrounded by landscaped grounds that evoke the feel of a destination resort.
New York City-inspired restaurants and a high-energy night club will make the casino an entertainment destination for non-gaming clients as well. Hearkening back to the glory days of the original Catskill resorts, a significant Event Center is designed to host top entertainment and sporting events.
