Crawford Partnership designs the Tann Rokka Tea Rooms in London

Planning Approval was recently granted for a striking new sculptured building flanking the main western railway line from Euston Station. Situated on a corner of an imposing 100m long pedestrian bridge and opposite the old Primrose Hill Station, the building signals a new landmark for this prominent gateway that leads to the busy shopping area of Regents Park Road and Primrose Hill in North West London. Influenced by the clients desire to build and operate a contemporary and bespoke Tea Room, the design has been informed by the many historical examples of the this genre from architects such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow and the more minimalist starkly modern environments of the Lyons Tea Rooms of the 1950’s. In seeking to emulate the elegant and contemporary designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh we have sought to provide a new building exploiting natural daylight and the attributes of the site through clear spatial concepts and rigorous detailing, The conceptual idea for the building has evolved from the unique characteristics of the site, with its wedge like shape and cliff like position inspiring the composition of three shard-like structural elements that in turn dictate the interior spaces and form a distinctive volume within the first floor living area. The angular and kinetic massing is intended as a counterpoint to the dynamic but regulated presence of the railway below. The concrete, glass and profiled metal cladding of the building fabric give a unique identity to the sculpted forms of the new building whilst providing a transition between the stuccoed villas and the industrial railway structures adjacent, offering a synergy between old and new, rough & smooth.
