Designed by HOK and Ratio Architects, Southeast Regional Treatment Center recognizes benefits of sustainable design to advance quality patient care 

Three buildings on the campus of Indiana’s Southeast Regional Treatment Center have earned LEED® certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The hospital design applies sustainable principles to create an ideal healing environment. To enhance both energy efficiency and therapeutic benefits, interior spaces provide as much access to sunlight and views as possible. Corridors with relatively narrow floorplates surround a central courtyard to allow for maximum daylighting in patient rooms. Skylights, clerestories and highly fenestrated hallways introduce natural light to public spaces. Shading devices and obscured glass in private areas prevent excessive glare. Additional strategies include: an HVAC system optimized for patient comfort and overall efficiency, a building management system installed to maintain peak performance, and the use of non-toxic materials to protect indoor air quality. The Treatment Center has also developed an innovative approach to incorporating sustainability into patient therapy. Patients’ daily activities include learning how to separate and recycle waste products. In addition, silverware has replaced the use of plastic utensils. Measures such as these are intended to help prepare patients for their future life off campus as much as possible while also reducing the solid waste created on site.
