SMC Hickton madeley designs new £6.5m college faculty

Leading Midlands architecture and design consultancy SMC Hickton Madeley is to provide the creative force behind the first £6.5 million phase of an exciting new university quarter for Stoke on Trent. The Telford and Birmingham-based firm has received planning consent for its design of a new Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) for Stoke-on-Trent College’s Faculty of Care. The 4,200 sq m building will provide new learning environments for the Departments of Catering, Hair and Beauty, and Childcare, along with a centralised work zone for the academic staff. The main executive suite of the college will also be relocated within the new facility. SMC Hickton Madeley, which recently designed the college’s purpose-built School of Construction, completed in 2005 on the College’s Burslem Campus, has produced a contemporary design for the Faculty of Care by sympathetically using the design influences from the architecture that previously occupied the campus site and the adjacent Grade 2-listed Victorian park designed by Thomas Mawson in the 1890s. The north façade could provide a street influence and form the first part of a pedestrian walkway that will eventually link all new and existing buildings on the campus. SMC Hickton Madeley will be leading a traditional team that includes engineers Arup and quantity surveyors AA Projects in a scheme that will benefit the local community with both the provision of a new educational facility and the restoration of the Victorian park to its former glory. Work on the new Faculty of Care will begin on site in May 2007, with completion scheduled for June 2008.
