Work has started on site of the £16m Austin-Smith Lord designed element of Liverpool’s Paradise Street Development Area
An 185,000ft² multi level car park which includes retail and commercial functions. The scheme is expected to be complete by early 2008. The Paradise Street Development Area is a substantial part of Liverpool City Centre and has many vacant sites and buildings. It is in this area that the city began. The PSDA cuts right into the heart of the City and offer one of the most exciting and challenging opportunities for City Centre renaissance in Europe. The original BDP Master plan creates several new places and public spaces, creating a wide ranging scope for varied architecture, with a view to giving each part of the development “attention to detail” and to achieving variety and “richness” in the developed area; and to reestablishing Liverpool as a city of architectural excellence and innovation. The whole site occupies 42 acres and will feature 40 individually designed buildings in 6 districts and over 1.6 m ft² of retail facility. It was agreed between Liverpool City Council and the developer; Grosvenor, that the existing street pattern, buildings of historic or architectural interest and existing public open space would be retained as far as practicable and existing views of landmark buildings and adjacent areas would be retained and new views and
walkways opened up where possible.
