Germán del Sol Architects design "green" apartment building in Madrid

This is an 80 apartment building and a parking lot, developed in Vallecas, a small town that is part of Madrid, by ”EMV” (The Madrid Municipality Housing Company), that is owned and managed by the City of Madrid. This project was awarded when German del Sol won the XII Bienal de Arquitectura Latino Americana in October 2003. One of EMV main policies was to improve the quality of public housing in Madrid. This project intends to improve the quality of houses from inside and out for men and women who live in the Madrid suburbs. The apartments have more front, than depth, so they receive much more daylight, and dark interior spaces are avoided. Extra space surrounds the buildings with a gigantic trellis or vine arbor, made of zinc steel pipes that also cover their roofs. The underground parking lot leaves the block’s central patio free for six big trees (Acer Pseudo Platanus) to be transplanted into it to give color to light and shade to this small park that is also unique in its neighborhood
