Last spring Behnisch Architekten won, together with an international design team, the competition for the revitalisation of the Cultural District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The objective of the project is the rejuvenation of central Pittsburgh and the cultural district, which was severely affected by the decline of heavy industry. The new RiverParc district, as it is called, will provide some 700 residential units, retail, restaurants, a hotel and a congress building near the Allegheny river, which will be an essential element of the sustainable urban concept. The competition was organised by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, a non-profit organisation created to lead the cultural and economic development of downtown Pittsburgh, with the objective of developing an attractive and vibrant urban arts and residential district in which living, cultural activities and commerce interact. The new district will comprise four city blocks and create around 9,200 jobs for the region. The proposal of the design team headed by Behnisch Architekten carries the motto “A sustainable vision for a vibrant city district”.
