Innovative acoustic shell results in stunning interior
Responding to the nearby Palo Duro Canyon, the Globe-News Center’s distinctive red sandstone and swooping roofline distinguish it as a regional landmark. Borne of grassroots efforts to build a performance hall of excellence in Amarillo, Texas, the building accommodates diverse programming including orchestra, ballet and opera. The curvilinear interior enclosure is composed of cascading wood panels, stained a warm color, specially angled to optimize the acoustical experience. Devised to allow for quick transitions from concert performances to theatrical events, the one-piece orchestral shell is suspended from an overhead crane, moving rapidly on- and off-stage via remote control.
