Frank Gehry’s first building in New York City nears completion. The design is for new global headquarters for media mogul Barry Diller and will be based in the Chelsea area across from the Hudson River. The building will house Diller’s company InterActiveCorp, a group of Internet based businesses that focus on travel.
The ten-storey structure, estimated at $100m, resembles a ship at sea with its sails billowing. Gehry has broken down the building’s massiveness into a series of arced bays, five on the ground level and three above. Clad in fritted glass the building is white by day and translucent at night.
