This house calibrates the delicate balance of modesty and majesty. Ostensibly a new house, the project involved tearing down most of an existing 1970’s suburban “ranch burger” that occupied a 3-acre site, filled with stunning trees and vegetation. A new expansive public wing marries the house to its surroundings visually and ecologically, while a new 4-car garage completes the dynamic, but balanced composition. The existing private wings of the house were entirely reconfigured to “stitch” old and new together seamlessly. The new public wing’s “great room” celebrates the owners’ casual lifestyle, which involves frequent entertaining, and houses the wife’s significant collection of works by young emerging contemporary artists, as well as her office for her art consultancy business. The new garage is intended to display the husband’s car collection similar the house does the wife’s contemporary art.
