Telford is the largest purpose built college to be built in Scotland for three decades. It’s located in the new Waterfront development on the outskirts of Edinburgh overlooking the Firth of Forth. The total space - 35000 m² - includes a wide variety of learning environments equipped with ‘touchdown’ desks for students to freely use the internet and to work on assignments. Providing natural light and ventilation to the classrooms on either side, the Learning Streets avoids the ‘corridor’ effect typical of large education establishments. The HOK design team worked closely with Max Fordham Environmental Engineers to produce a building envelope which exploits natural day lighting and stack ventilation in an intelligent fashion. External terracotta rainscreen panels relate to the historic Edinburgh colour palette. Daylight, heat gain and solar glare are all controlled locally to minimise energy use. Clerestory windows to the classrooms and high level windows to the atria are operated by the BMS to avoid unnecessary heat losses.
