TEN Arquitectos’s competition-winning scheme connects New Jersey College campus to the river

Enrique Norten of Ten Arquitectos has won a competition to redesign a large swath of the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick New Jersey. The plan calls for remaking the public spaces, including converting a four-block section of roadway into a pedestrian friendly streetscape, and creating a new transparent cylindrical academic building to be sited at the River’s edge. Importantly, Norten’s design will connect the college’s campus for the first time to the nearby Raritan River. That river has played such an integral part in this School’s tradition that even its alma mater “On the Banks of the Old Raritan” speaks of its riverside location. That will finally become a reality at the hands of Norten. The first phase of the project is estimated at 15million. No timetable for construction has been announced.
