Ground was broken in November for the 275 million Dallas Center for the Performing Arts. The project includes venues designed by OMA and Foster and Partners. The Winspear Opera House, designed by Foster and Partners, will stage opera, ballet, music theatre and other large-scale performances. It is a radical rethinking of an opera house. It inverts the closed, hierarchical form creating a transparent series of public spaces that wrap around the red drum of a 2,200 seat theatre. Co-designed by OMA and Johsua Prince-Ramus of Ramus Ella Architects (REX), the Wyly Theatre will seat 600. The 12-storey building features an innovative vertically stacked organization that rethinks the traditional form of the theatre. Rather than wrap around the stage, support spaces here are located above and below the auditorium to enable maximum interaction and flexibility of performance space and seating. Both buildings are located in an Arts District anchored by buildings designed by Edward Larabee Barnes, I.M Pei, and Renzo Piano. The two projects will sit in a ten-acre public park designed by Michael Desvigne of Paris. Completion is expected in 2009.
