WELLINGTON, poised on the edge of an extinct volcanic crater on the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. Flat, accessible building sites are difficult to find and as with this commission, new building platforms are often carved from existing titles and are subject to considerable design challenges, site constraints & planning regulations. Architecture RobinsonCrimp designed this 120 sq.m new home on an exposed steep site that features sweeping unobstructed sea views. The small land footprint and steeply rising terrain informed the careful vertical planning response and consideration to privilege framed views from all rooms and selected sheltered outdoor spaces. A small palette of robust materials provide response to the often harsh climate conditions and meet the client’s brief of a modest budget, low maintenance home.
