Grimshaw's EMPAC Project for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York Aims to be Completed by 2007

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is one of America’s leading research universities. Grimshaw’s design for its new Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center is a nexus of technological and artistic innovation. Sited on a steep slope overlooking the Hudson River, the 160,000 sq ft building will contain a 1,200-seat concert hall, a 400-seat “black box” theater, two adaptive performance studios, and a dance studio. The multi-layered building is one in which different activities can take place concurrently without segregation of building users. Key to the design is the atrium space, which acts a hub for informal social interaction and as the lobby to the major spaces.
