Clients wanted a “surprise house,” set at the tip of an island.

The house is situated between a tightly packed neighborhood and panoramic views of a lake and hills beyond. A stone wall bisects the site with a neighborly garden at the front and a complex of private gardens and stone terraces at the water’s edge. Inspired by nearby granite outcroppings, vertical concrete blocks rise from a textured cast concrete plinth. Major spaces are united by a broad open porch that runs the length of the house. Extensive glazing invites natural light and engages views. Exterior materials are brought inside to further emphasize the blending of interior and exterior.
