This penthouse is built on an existing five-story apartment building dating from 1896, which has been renovated and where possible, returned to its original appearance. The penthouse is clad in titanium zinc tiles, an abstracted reference to the neighbouring roofs clad in slate.
The design is based upon four principles; the first is to capture the impressive view of the Frankfurt skyline and the surrounding countryside. The second is to take advantage of the path of the sun throughout the day. Morning sun illuminates the living area and the evening sun shines directly on to the terrace.
The third wish is to extinguish the boundary between internal and external space. Specially designed large-format windows fold and slide back into the wall planes, providing unobstructed views from the living area to the terrace and the hills beyond.
The final concern is that of a spatial duality between a completely open plan and one that can be subdivided to achieve smaller intimate spaces. Flexibility is achieved through a series of folding panels that cantilever from the main supporting walls; these offer numerous subdivisions within the main space.
