The Bourke Street apartment is a light-filled rooftop residence above the Smart Design Studio in Sydney. It is characterised by its folded roof plane, which boldly cantilevers over the existing corner terrace and workspace below, enclosing a highly refined space which overlooks mature plane trees and a cityscape of terracotta rooftops and chimney pots. The plan is simple with the living and sleeping spaces separated by an island pod, which conceals the service spaces. Combined with the selection of finishes - from the natural limestone flooring and walnut-lined bookshelves to the stainless steel and white corian kitchen - and the exposed steel structure and aluminium battened ceiling, the apartment showcases the approach of Smart Design Studio and was the winner of the Royal Australian Institute of Architect's Award for Architecture Conservation and Adaptive RE-use in 2006.
