A Building Systems Prototype for the Renovation of Baltimore's Rowhouses

‘Green-HAB’ is a building systems prototype for the rehab of Baltimore’s row houses. The prototype reconfigures the elements of construction common to ‘rehab’ projects as a structurally and materially expressive building system. Perpetual layers of joint compound and paint are abandoned in favor of exposed gypsum board, metal framing and materials including homasote, wheat-board, bamboo and concrete which are sustainable, available and visually compelling. Additional sustainable features include thermal windows, increased building insulation, high performance mechanical systems, appliances and lighting, and roof water irrigation. The ‘shell’ for this 725 sf. prototype house is a 12’ wide alley house, the least common denominator of local housing stock. The design features a central skylight, sliding walls and an open plan with compact amenities demonstrating the special possibilities of even the smallest structures.
