Studio Bednarski Ltd has been declared the winner in the Design for an emerging world - Future communities project at Cityscape 2006 in Dubai.
The Kariobangi South Community project involves master planning and building design, initially for 500 houses. Studio Bednarski developed a low cost house model based on a courtyard pattern and shared walls. Each house features a street-side room that is intended as a means of income generation through rent or employment
Kibera occupies less than 2.5 km2 and contains around 850,000 residents. For comparison the whole of Gibraltar, 6.5 km2 has 27,844.
.All materials would be locally sourced environmental sustainability strategies include orientation, cross-ventilation, shading, and rainwater collection, solar water heating and communal solar kitchens. This, combined with wall art by local artists, will create a lively environment where living and working intertwine.
The project has also been short listed in the RIBA sustainable community by design competition the first two ‘show houses’ are to be built in 2006/07
