The Deakin University Central Precinct project in Melbourne, Australia, represents a new urban model for campus planning and institutional building design, responding to the current issues confronting education and educational facilities. The project is an assembly of four buildings organised around a central atrium, elevated above an entry road and linked with bridges and ramps to adjacent areas. It creates a sheltered heart with urban proximities for the University campus, adjacent to the woodlands environment of Gardiners Creek. The project is planned in four distinct forms and orientations, relating to the different functional aspects of the brief for recreation, teaching, hospitality and lecture uses.
In response to physical parameters of the creek environment, the project faces north and opens onto the creek and parkland system, creating a landscape space between the building and the creek.
