SMC Hickton Madeley unveils design for a new college in Middlesborough
Catering for 20,000 students and more than 600 staff, the 32,000 sq m facility for Middlesbrough College will be the first and largest building in the regeneration master plan for Middlehaven.
The designs for the iconic building have drawn inspiration from the city’s great shipbuilding heritage in their aim of creating a sustainable world-class further education facility for one of Europe’s most attractive and vibrant dockland developments.
The new college, to be completed in summer 2008, will consolidate existing college sites at Marton, Kirby, Longlands and Acklam and bring some 2,600 full-time and 17,000 part-time students into the heart of the area to create a vibrant 24-hour community.
Students will be able to study in a unique setting designed on the theme of a ship’s hull surging through a wave. The ‘wave’ will be represented by a low-rise large-span enclosure for activities ranging from sport to bricklaying, while the ‘hull’ will be characterised by a taller block to house teaching rooms and administrative offices.
