Southern California Museum Expands with Gluckman
New York architect Richard Gluckman has designed a major expansion to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD). The project, which is set to open in January 2007, includes the restoration of the historic Santa Fe Depot baggage building and a new three-storey addition.
The expansion will add 30,000 square feet of museum space, new outdoor exhibition spaces, and an artist-in-residence studio. The Mission style Depot, which has been meticulously restored and will continue to function as a station, will house new galleries and public spaces. The adjoining addition, which is clad in corrugated metal panels with channel glass and aluminum storefront windows, will house a 120-seat auditorium, educational, curatorial and administrative spaces.
