SOM's design of Tyrol Tower in Austria
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has been commissioned by Roadpark Verwaltungs GmbH to design a 137 metre tower at the heart of the Tyrol valley in Wörgl, Austria. The structure will match the height of the Stephansdom in Vienna, acting as a landmark for the Tyrol Region and a symbol for modern Austria.
The 40,000 square metre site lies adjacent to the A12 autobahn, which forms a key route between southern Germany and northern Italy. The development will comprise two hotels, apartments, offices, shops and a casino, offering a welcome tourist attraction for the 45,000 vehicles which pass through the region daily. Locals will experience an important boost to the economy, as the 28 storey development is expected to provide around 600 jobs.
The unique streamlined form of the tower was developed as the result of analysis of wind forces in the Lower Inn valley. In addition the use of the latest environmental technologies will allow the development to be carbon neutral, the goal is that this vertical village will have a positive impact on the region.
