Kisho Kurokawa to build St. Petersburg's new stadium

The Governor of St. Petersburg has announced the winner of the international competition for a new football stadium for Zenit Football Club. The winning scheme, proposed by a Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa will replace the 1950's Kirovsky stadium on Krestovsky island. This spaceship-like stadium will accommodate more than 62 thousand spectators and feature a high-tech structure with a movable field system and retractable roof with hot air-inflated membrane structure. Kurokawa's proposal also includes the construction of a new road, three parks, and sports, entertainment and tourism facilities, which make the master plan for the new Krestovsky island. New stadium is expected to be inaugurated by the start of 2009 season.
