Contemporary design wins planning

London based architect Cezary M Bednarski, former Manser Medal winner, 2001, has recently won planning consent for this contemporary design located on the Portobello Estate, Notting Hill Gate, London. The site, formally a children’s playground, turned drunk’s den, is only 6m by 18m, but Bednarski was adamant that all the possible space was utilised. The envelope of the building hits all the boundaries of the site, ultimately producing 316m² of internal floor space. Instead of being a conventional single building conversion, it is instead a totally new building that consists of two small, yet ample maisonettes. The building also has an extensive environmental agenda: solar heating with evacuated solar tube system, rain water collection and a wind turbine. The concrete structure is planned to go on site in January 2007.
