Design of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU’s winning competition entry for the Alborg ‘House of Music’ is nearing completion. The €64 million, 28,000 m² structure has been designed to incorporate and merge public space, with music performance, research and education. The building’s focal point is a 1200 seat concert hall raised 10 metres above ground level, which cantilevers out over the fjord, enclosed in a flowing glass shell. Its form and position is designed to create a continuous visual connection between the building, the programmes within it and the adjacent fjord. The education functions, such as music and architecture from Aalborg University, and the Academy of Music are separated into two differentiated ‘beam’ buildings both raised 7 metres above the ground. Both are connected by the event foyer where music, education, culture and the public merge. Construction is due to start towards the end of this year.
