COOP HIMMELB(L)AU’s Musée Des Confluences moves towards construction

The Oxford English dictionary defines confluence as ‘a coming together’. This tells a large part of the story regarding COOP HIMMELB(L)AU’s new museum in Lyon, earmarked for construction in September. This 27,600 m² design strives to hybridise future knowledge by morphing and overlapping transitional fields of education, such as technology, biology and ethics, decided as the central themes of the building. As a result, spaces mutate into one another via penetration, deformation, coexistence, breakdown and variability. Much of the architecture relies on soft and hard spaces to define the building’s too main programmes: an urban venue and a museum for the knowledge of now. The building is expected to cost €100 million and entertain 500,000 visitors per year.
