Marks Barfield Architects and XCO2 unveil a visionary new form of urban energy generation
The Beacon is a new form of micro-generation that will bring the debate about wind energy back to the city. Wind energy is one of the best forms of renewables around. But most energy generation is in remote locations, and 30% to 50% of energy is lost through transmission. This would be avoided by generating the energy directly in our cities.
The Beacon is a 40 metre high Y-shaped structure designed to be ‘planted’ along major roads and public spaces, reaching up to the stronger winds above the city’s buildings. Each Beacon supports five vertical ‘triple-helix’ wind turbines called ‘quietrevolution.
