After four years of intensive construction Steven Holl Architect's University of Iowa Art and Art History Building is nearing completion. This new 21.5 million dollar structure, situated by the Iowa river, partially straddles a lagoon and joins to an adjacent limestone bluff. The 67,000 ft² building incorporates classrooms, gallery space, a library, faculty offices, meeting rooms, an auditorium and a café. Many of the complex interior spaces and routes overlap at the building’s centre where the student’s ongoing work can be observed. From this centre, many functions disperse to end points, where site specific relationships are embellished. During warmer summer days many of the studios open out prescribing various flexible working environments.
