HASSELL complete an award winning extension to historic railway station and transport interchange in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta.
Historic station - the birthplace of railway in New South Wales, it was built in the 1850s and become the second largest railway station in Sydney suburban network at the turn of the 21st Century. An upgrade to the Parramatta Transport Interchange was one of key elements of the NSW Government’s ‘Action for Transport 2010’ strategy. The new roof over the station is the recognisable signature of the Parramatta Transport Interchange providing a singular space of presence and clarity within the heart of the city. The large roof, which spans the Main Western Line at the western end of the station, is an open structure with a permeable, glazed façade to ameliorate climate and create a new, lasting image for the station. The design evolved through a careful consideration of passenger amenity, function, safety, environmental factors and constructability.
