Calatrava designs the tallest and arguably most unique residential tower in Sweden
A mixed-use 18,000 m2 residential tower with an innovative design based on a sculpture by Santiago Calatrava, in which the human figure in motion is abstracted into a series of cubes twisted around a core, approaches completion.
At 190 meters (623 feet) the HSB Turning Torso is the tallest residential building in Sweden and the second tallest in Europe.
The twisting form is composed of nine box units, shaped like cubes with triangular tips. These units, each houses five floors, are in effect “sub-buildings” The space in between the units is used as technical space for facade maintenance.
The project is as an important part of the redevelopment of Malmö’s Western Harbor near the Öresund Bridge, which connects Sweden and Denmark
Occupancy of the apartments will begin in November 2005.
