After eight years in construction, Berlin’s new €700m EUR Hauptbahnhof central station has opened in time for the start of the World Cup. Designed by architects Gerkan, Marg & Partners the building has a classic arched glass and has five levels. The new station was built on no-man’s land between the former East and West Berlin. The station forms a new interchange and links the north and south of the city with the east and west for the first time. More than 300,000 passengers a day will use the new station, with trains departing every 90 seconds. Eight other Berlin tube and rail stations will open too, in a project costing up to €10bn.
