Johnson Pilton Walker’s Suzhou Logistics Centre reflects an image of modern technology
The Suzhou Logistics Centre at Suzhou Industrial Park recently won the 2005 "China Architectural Project Luban Award" awarded jointly by the National Construction Ministry and Chinese Architectural Association. The 25 storey administration building includes public spaces for customs clearance, quarantine inspections, function rooms and offices. It provides a variety of operations in its multifunction role as a customs clearance centre and international storage facility. The building composition expresses two distinct building forms, a horizontal white podium building and a vertical red tower structure. The tower has two façades, the south façade incorporates horizontal louvers to provide sun control and the east and west facades appear to reflect the characteristics of stacked containers. To emphasize this one ‘container’ is playfully stacked in front of the rest. The red color was selected to match the shipping containers in the Centre.
