ANDO's new project completed in Tokyo
A massive residential and commercial complex has appeared in Omotesando, a leading fashion area in Tokyo. It shows a 250m facade along the street, and is composed of 6 floors above the ground and 6 floors below, so as not to exceed the height of the row of zelkova trees along the building and to harmonize it with the city.
This is a redevelopment project for the site of a large apartment building called Dojunkai Aoyama Apartments, which was the first full-dress reinforced concrete apartment building after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, and was said to be the pioneer and the best of Japanese apartment buildings.
It was designed by Tadao Ando to succeed the apartments which have left a long lasting and deep impression to the people, and to make it come to life in a completely different way.
