AROS architects win planning for gateway site

AROS architects [London] recently achieved planning consent for two hotels on a gateway site in Salford Quays, Manchester, UK. The challenge was to provide to 350 rooms split into separate hotels for the Ramada and Accor hotel groups who are implementing new brands targeted at different market levels. The different room sizes and window sizes were expressed as hierarchal elevational treatments in the envelope using surface articulation such as reveals and sliding planes of colour. The result is a striking yet homogenous building with an economic envelope that clearly expresses the two different occupiers. Salford Urban Vision Partnership [the local planning authority] have been watching the site closely and see it as pivotal to the future development corridor along Trafford Rd. They are said to be very happy with the way the design has developed. The project starts on site next month with completion in autumn 2007.
