A new radio tower is to be built in Sumida, Tokyo, adjacent to Asakusa, one of the city's main sight-seeing spots. This project has been triggered by the the shift to digital broadcasting in 2011. The new tower is planned to be about 610m tall, breaking the record of the current tallest CN tower in Toronto, Canada (553m). It will contain two observation decks (350m/450m), broadcasting facilities, offices, shops and restaurants, and is expected to become the new symbol of this traditional area and the stronghold for disaster prevention. The construction of this new landmark will start in 2008, aiming to be completed in 2011.
