The Gerard L. Cafesjian Museum, designed by David Hotson Architect, is
located in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. An axis is defined by monuments dating from the Soviet era,
including the Cascade, an unfinished structure of stairs rising from the city centre to the new museum.
From this elevated location the museum site commands sweeping views across
Yerevan.
The design treats the museum building as an extension of the Cascade,
expanding the existing stairs and escalators to complete the urban axis. The
sloping roof of the building will create an inclined public park. Along principal public pathways through the museum complex spatial volumes will frame vistas of symbolic elements in the surrounding landscape. The exterior views are complemented by interior vistas framing major works in
the museum's collection. The new building will engage visitors in a personal dialogue
with the ancient and contemporary cultural context of the newly independent
Republic.
