The Architecture Programme at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) has announced the winners of its Urban Eyrie competition organised in conjunction with World Architecture News (WAN). The brief was set to inspire designers to create a ‘haven in the city’ – a place where people can find personal space but still engage with the energy of the city around them. The jury was formed of Sir Richard MacCormac RA (Chair), Richard Coleman (WAN), Henrietta Thompson (Blueprint) from London and Kisho Kurokawa from Tokyo. Sponsorship for the £3K prize money was from WAN. The winning design by Ricky Lee from Hong Kong, was an exotic solution integrated into the vertical neon advertising that flanks the classic Chinese street. By choosing such a frenetic location for his ‘haven’, Lee had captured the essence of the brief. Second place went to THED, a group which comprised Elin Eriksson, Daniel Lorenzo, Hanna Kronstrand and Thue Haslov who proposed a humorous solution called the nosoundbag which creates a portable sound-free zone using “almost-here” technology. The international element of the competition was enabled by WAN’s news channel which already reaches 22,000 architects in 100 countries since its launch last autumn. Entries were submitted from India, Japan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, Australia, Mexico as well as the UK. The geographic diversity led to a wide spectrum of designs which included a variety of pods, a whispering gallery and roof-top structures.
The Urban Eyrie display of finalists is at the Royal Academy of Arts - Architecture on the Ramp, Burlington House, Piccadilly London W1J 0BD until 22nd May. Admission is free during normal RA open hours
