Natural illumination for new galleries

The Atlanta High Museum of Art has completed a major expansion designed by Renzo Piano with specialist engineering by Arup. Working collaboratively with the architectural team, Arup played an integral part in the development of the roof day-lighting system. Natural illumination for the permanent collection galleries located on the top floors of the two new museum buildings is supplied by 1,000 light scoops that capture and filter northern light. Three new buildings provide new exhibition space as well as enhanced education facilities that more than double the size of the Museum. Glass-enclosed bridges link the current building to the Pavilion lobby and skyway levels. All three buildings are painted with the Meier-designed building’s signature white enamel façade.
