Request for original ideas
Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki announced the issuance of a Request For Ideas to redevelop and preserve Governor's Island, an underutilised 172-acre sanctuary off New York Harbour. Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava who has recently moved to the city unveiled his conceptual model of an ‘aerial gondola’ transportation system- This could create new connections between Manhattan, Brooklyn and Governor's Island. Its gondola cars are transparent, offering a 360-degree view of the harbour. The system uses only three supports, none of which stand in the water, so the shipping channels are left completely open. British architect Norman Foster has plans to convert Castle Williams located on the north-west corner of Governor’s Island into a replica of Shakespeare’s London Globe Theatre. Responses to the Request are due by May 10, 2006
