COBE and Wessberg og Alectia redevelop Nordhavnen Silo into private apartments
Work has begun to transform a series of industrial buildings in Nordhavnen, Copenhagen Harbor, into a thriving new neighbourhood. As part of this development, a number of silos will be transformed into modern facilities, the largest of which will become a residential and public access property.
Designed by COBE with engineers Wessberg og Alectia for client Union Holding (represented by Klaus Kastbjerg), The Silo is the tallest silo within the development and has become a firm feature for the local community. Plans therefore include public areas at ground level and on the top floor to encourage Copenhagen residents to interact with the building.
Klaus Kastbjerg explains: “The Silo is a well-known building to many Copenhageners and is an icon in Nordhavnen. Furthermore, the silo is the largest industrial building in Nordhavnen and it has a majestic slenderness. It is a landmark in the industrial landscape - right where Oresund meets Copenhagen.”
Inside the form, the previous use as a grain silo is clearly expressed in the wide variety of internal volumes. As such, the building can afford 40 different apartments with floor heights of up to 8m, ranging from 80 sq m to a generous 800 sq m over multiple levels.
Once complete, the transformed building will encompass 17 storeys and stand 62m tall, with each apartment enjoying panoramic views and balconies angled towards Copenhagen and Oresund. The design team has been careful to retain the original features of the structure, blending the raw industrial heritage with modern features.
Klaus Kastbjerg continues: “The exciting thing about old industrial property is how to preserve their soul and at the same time use them for something else, when the original use is terminated. With this project we want to maintain the familiar identity of the silo and at the same time renew and transform it into a modern landmark for Nordhavnen.”
Dan Stubbergaard, Founder and Creative Director at COBE furthers: “With the transformation, the silo will be wrapped in a new facade that upgrades the former industrial building to current standards. However, the existing interior of the silo will be preserved as much as possible and the raw industrial architecture will be a visible element.
"So, apart from unique views and ultra-modern apartments, the new inhabitants will also have one of a kind spatiality with historic remnants such as visible concrete columns and walls.”
